Pidgin (formerly,Gaim) is the Free & Open Source solution to having friends, family, and colleagues on different IM chat networks. When your Mom is on AOL, and your best mate is living in Australia and using MSN and and your employer forces you to use Yahoo!, your only real solution is Pidgin. Simply open up Pidgin, connect to all of your IM accounts, and chat away on all at the same time.
